Caring for Aluminum Shutters
This recommendation covers simple and easy maintenance of aluminum shutters and is intended to assist those who are concerned
with the care and maintenance of their powder coated shutters.
In many atmospheres cleaning is desirable, especially
in areas of heavy industrial deposit dirt, soil or areas containing sea salt air or foggy conditions. We highly recommend
that all cleaning be done on the shaded side of the house. Always follow recommendations of the cleaner manufacturer. Never
mix cleaners; this can result in poison gas emission. Low water volume with moderate pressure is recommended if need to clean
with pressure washer. Sponges, terry cloth or soft bristle brushes may be used to assist in removing stubborn soil. Always
thoroughly rinse shutters with clean water. If desired a chamois or lint free cloth may be used to wipe dry.
- Construction
soils such as concrete, mortar, caulking or paint should be removed as soon as possible using a non-abrasive cleanser.
- It is advised that maintenance and cleaning of shutters be done at least twice a year.
- Do
not use abrasive cleaners or materials such as steel wool, abrasive brushes, etc., as these can cause wear and harm finishes.
- Use a mild bio-degradable cleanser [Dawn dish detergent] that will not scratch or mar the shutters and is
ruled safe for bare hands. Do not use strong solvents as these can cause damage to powder coated surfaces.
- Lubricate
all movable or adjustable parts [hinges, screws, arms, etc.] with an aluminum recommended lubricant, such as LC Wax, or any
lubricant recommended for aluminum.
- It is advised that documentation of maintenance be kept. This should
include:
- Dates of cleaning
- Type of cleansers used
- Type of
lubricant used
The above information will aid you in the maintaining the operation of the shutters and also
assist in providing a longer lasting finish on your shutters.
